What is Discord?
Discord is a proprietary freeware VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) application and digital distribution platform—designed initially for the video gaming community—that specializes in text, image, video and audio communication between users in a chat channel. Discord runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and in web browsers.
Casually described, you can type, talk, video chat and share files with others using Discord.
How do I download Discord?
Signing up to use Discord is very simple. For starters, head over to discordapp.com and click the “Download for Windows” button found below. Alternatively, you may use the “Open Discord” button for a simple web version. If you are using a mobile device, you will find "Discord" in the app store on your Android or Apple device.
How to Direct Message
Direct messages are one-on-one conversations. Only you and this person can see this conversation. There are many ways to start a Direct Message with a friend. You may click their profile name and type in the “Message” box, right click their profile name and select “message”, or find them in your “Friends” section and click directly on their name. This will pull up a private Direct Message with them where the two of you can text back and forth.
Using Discord Servers
Discord servers are a communication hub with both text and voice channels. Think of any server you join as a giant treehouse- each text channel within a server represents another room within your treehouse that you can chat with people. To see the discord servers you’re in, you can check the sidebar just under the direct message/friends tab in the top left. This will show you which servers you’re currently in, and also allow you to join or create other servers.
Sending a Friend Request
Just like on other social media sites such as Facebook, you may add friends on Discord. To add a friend, click the top left Discord icon, then click the “Friends” section. Click the button that says “Add Friend,” then type in their DiscordTAG (including the name, # sign and 4 digit number), and then click “Send Friend Request.” See Below:
Once they have accepted your friend request, you may find them in the “Friends” section under “All”
Accepting a Friend Request:
When you have been sent a friend request, you will see an alert next to the “Friends” section.
To accept a friend request, click the “Friends” section. You will then see an alert next to the “Pending” section. Click Pending. You will then see the individual who has sent the request along with any mutual servers you may share. You may then click the ✔ to accept, or the ✖ to ignore. See below:
Once you have accepted the friend request, you may find this person (and all friends) in the “All” section of the “Friends” tab.
Mentions are a way to directly notify a user, multiple users or roles in messages. The main purpose of mentions is to send a notification to someone, allowing them to see it sooner. For pinging individuals, simply do @Name in your message, typing just the first few letters of their name should pop up a selector of anyone matching that name. For pinging a group of people, you can do @Role and select the corresponding role. For example, @Admins would ping anyone who has the role “Admins” on the discord. This can allow you to summon an admin if you need assistance.
Discord allows you to share files directly with individuals. Clicking by the next to the area where you would normally enter discord text. By clicking this, you will see a button indicated “Upload a File”, which allows you to upload a file of up to 8MB.
Screen Sharing / Voice Calling
Discord allows you to call someone directly, to do so click on their name in your Direct Messages, and near the top right you will see two buttons. One indicated “Start Voice Call” which will send them a call notification and give the other person a green button indicated “Join Call”. Once they join the call you will be able to talk to them through voice chat on discord and either individual may Screen Share their screen if they wish. To Screen Share, simply click the “Turn On Screen Share” option, and select which of your monitors you wish to show.
